Subtitling is an artTranslating by the square centimetre. That is subtitling in a nutshell. As most people read more slowly than they speak, there is often insufficient time available to translate a spoken sentence in its entirety. A subtitler must therefore make choices. What information is indispensable for the viewer? Is there a shorter synonym for a word? How do you translate a joke or a song?

Playing with wordsSubtitling involves playing with words. That also applies to subtitling programmes for the deaf and hard of hearing. Background music or telephone rings are picked up without any trouble by those with good hearing. That is not the case with deaf and hearing-impaired people. The subtitler therefore adds titles with extra information, so that this group does not miss anything either.
